Make a Mother’s Day Card for Mom!

If there’s a special mom in your life who would appreciate some flowers, this DIY card is literally bursting with an explosion of vibrant, hand-painted blossoms and leaves. You can really make this card for anyone that's special in your life, or someone you consider a motherly figure! It's a great way to make someone in your life feel extra special.

Supplies

Card Stock on mixed media paper
Brushes: 1 Medium round brush
Set of Acrylic paint – White, Black, Yellow, Red, Green, Gold / Silver
Cup of Water
Paper Towels
Mixing plate
Scissors
Glue Stick

Step 1: Practice Painting a Variety of Leaf Shapes

Mix green and yellow acrylic paint on your mixing plate with enough water to give it a milky consistency. With a saturated-but not dripping-brush, paint an upward stroke, starting with low pressure to create a thin point, then pressing down to create the fullness of the leaf, decreasing pressure to create another point. Using the same techniques you practiced above, you can combine multiple leaves into lush branches. Start with a curving stem and single leaf, adding additional leaves along the stem, staggering placement and angles. Imperfect, flowing, and organic are the goals! Fill a couple of sheets of paper with beautiful leaf motifs in a variety of shapes.

Step 2: Paint the Flowers

Start by drawing the pistils and stamen with a black (preferably waterproof) pen. Then, using your medium round brush, grab some red, yellow, and white paint and paint organic blobs around the center.

While the blobs are drying, paint over the center in gold or silver, allowing the colors to slightly cover the black ink.

After the paint has dried, pick up the black pen again and draw five curved spokes coming out from the center of the flower. Next, outline the shape of the petals. Stay loose and organic; don’t worry about trying to trace the acrylic shapes exactly. Fill in the petals with additional lines to suggest detail and form.

Paint two vibrant anemones. To create the card as shown in my example, you’ll need 2 good-sized blossoms.

Step 3: Decorate the front of the Card

Choose your favorite flowers and leaves from the pages you painted and cut them out.

Using a flower blossom and an assortment of leaves, glue an arrangement onto the front of the card. Make sure to sign your card.

During our first week of summer camp, we offered a variety of creative activities and opportunities for your little artist to express themselves in a creative and fun environment.

Drawing and sketching: Campers learned fundamental drawing techniques, practice sketching from observation, and explore various styles and subjects.

Painting is a traditional method most people think of when creating art. By definition - painting is the practice of using tools like a paintbrush to apply paint, pigment or color to a solid surface like a canvas and create an image.

Unlike painting - no brush, no problem when it concerns acrylic pouring. The Paint Pouring method is considered an abstract technique where you can pour fluid paints on a surface to create art, and the good news is that you don't have to be Picasso to do it.

Why acrylic paint?

Acrylic paint is easy to find, easy to work with, it dries quickly and is easy to clean up. It also pairs beautifully with a number of other mediums and you can use whatever tools you have on hand to create different effects.

Depending on the type of result you're trying to achieve you can also easily add other liquids like silicon, water and even household rubbing alcohol.

Materials for a Paint Pouring Session

Keep it simple! All you truly need is paint, a medium - like a canvas found at any art supply store, and a solid surface to put your canvas on. As mentioned above, you can mix your paint with other liquids in a number of ways to achieve a desired result, but below is a widely used recipe to create a fool proof paint mixture:

Basic Acrylic Pouring Recipe:

Floetrol (professional paint additive) or Rubbing Alcohol - 2 parts
Distilled Water - 1 part
Silicone - 2 or 3 drops
Acrylic Paint - 1 part

If your paint mixture looks like syrup or viscous honey - you're on the right track! The key is to make sure your paint is not too thick, otherwise your newly poured piece of art will not dry properly or it could even crack.

Starter Pouring Techniques

Clean Pour
This refers to pouring one color at a time onto a surface.
Sometimes the goal here could be to use all desired colors separately on the surface - other times you can use a toothpick or another similar tool to create a pattern.
This type of pour is typically used for creating a color blocked or abstract look - but also could be great for kids who need to keep it simple but can get creative with a tool to manipulate the service for a custom design!
Dirty Pour
This process refers to a layering technique using a cup and pouring the cup contents onto the surface all at once.
Layer desired colors together by gently pouring the paint down the side of a cup or just plopping the paint colors together for a more dramatic blend
Manipulate your surface with whatever tool at hand to achieve the desired pattern and style
A popular end result of this technique is a faux - marbled look
Flip Cup Pour
This technique refers to placing an upside down cup full of paint onto a surface / canvas and then either pulling it off or poking holes in the top to allow the paint to come out
You can layer paint in the cup following the same method(s) as the dirty pour above
Once your paint is on the canvas - you can manipulate the surface similarly to both clean or dirty pour methods previously described.

It goes without saying that these past few months have been tough across the globe for everyone young and old. COVID-19 has affected nearly every area of our lives in one way or another.

Many businesses big and small – including Canvas n Cup – have learned to adapt in order to survive these challenging global circumstances. We’ve always been an in-person operation, so this has required creativity and flexibility. When things shut down and Zoom became everyone’s prime mode of communication, we decided to give it a try too, which proved to be an interesting endeavor indeed for our kind of business!

So how exactly did our Paint and Sip studio pivot to meet client needs during the global pandemic?

Creating Free Resources for our Clients Stuck at Home

Indeed, throughout this challenging time, Canvas n Cup has learned and grown a lot, having found new and creative ways to connect with our customers. Worldwide, the art industry is using technology on an ever-increasing basis to reach new audiences and deepen existing audience relationships. And Canvas n Cup is no exception – we’ve discovered the same benefits since introducing these elements into our business.

Our increased social media presence means that more people can find us, and those who already know of us are updated on our latest ventures.

We also began offering free online classes, complete with an instructor teaching a live audience through step-by-step instruction. Making these videos free allowed people to have a fun activity in a time of isolation, while not overwhelming anyone in a financially unstable period. The classes were recorded and made available on our website for those unable to attend live, allowing them to participate later at their leisure. To supplement, we also offered painting kits which included everything customers would need to paint along at home. These kits could be shipped to homes or picked up from our store, making it easy for those without art supplies or the correct materials to follow our tutorials. This way, our customers could fully relax and enjoy the lesson without worrying about having proper supplies. These videos are still available for free on our website and are an easy and fun activity for all ages!

Adding Online Painting Classes for Children, Families & Adults, and Companies

We also started Zoom classes and online parties which celebrated a range of occasions and spanned all age groups. At a time when in-person gathering was nearly impossible, “gathering” with friends and family online brought a lot of joy and comfort. Despite global pandemics, birthdays still roll around, people get engaged, they retire, and so on, and connecting with loved ones is still critical. Through it all our online classes gave people a way to celebrate and continue connecting with friends, family, and other important people.

Not only were friends and family looking to connect during this time, but companies were also searching for team building opportunities. Places of business were not able to meet together in person, strong team relationships are essential to keep a company healthy and cohesive. Companies from all over the U.S booked online events with us, reaching up to 250 people at one time. Our virtual painting classes gave employers an opportunity to give their workers a fun way to engage with each other in a time where it was only possible to do so through a screen.

Providing a Creative Outlet for Self-Expression When Most Needed

At a time when everyone was stuck at home and in need of an escape, our virtual art classes provided many people with an outlet for artistic expression. Crises and other difficult circumstances bring out a need for engaging our right brain. Activities like drawing, painting, music appreciation, and more can help relieve the feeling of isolation immensely. When we just can’t quite get our heads around what’s happening in the world, creative outlets are important for self-expression and overall well-being. Just when people were in need of these outlets, Canvas n Cup was here to help. Children who couldn’t hang out with their friends at school or on the playground – or even right next door for that matter – were given something fun to do… and meanwhile, parents were given a bit of a break as well.

Creating an Environment where Our Instructors and Clients Learn Together

Though the classes and parties have certainly been successful, adjusting to teaching online definitely came with its challenges. It’s an understatement to say that teaching lessons online is different than teaching in person – particularly in our type of business. But having no choice, our instructors learned how to do it effectively.

In our field especially, in-person instruction is easier for a number of reasons. For one, it makes checking students and their progress easy. Walking by, assessing work, and making appropriate suggestions is simple when you can see things close-up. Second, it’s also easier for students to ask questions face-to-face. Online instruction makes asking questions more daunting, as it spotlights each participant and their question, while in-person questions can be addressed individually. Students struggling with various techniques may be less inclined to speak up under these conditions. And third, keeping a child’s attention on a screen can also be quite a challenge. If they don’t feel entertained or interested in what’s going on, they won’t listen, or at the very least, will be distracted.

Despite these challenges, our instructors overcame obstacles and learned how to effectively deal with these situations. They were diligent to ensure each student got individual, personalized attention and was encouraged every step of the way.

Our online classes during the pandemic allowed customers to continue using their creativity, connect with loved ones, and simply have a good time (even when the possibility of having a good time seemed elusive for most people). Though we’re adjusting to some new rules and regulations, we’ve returned to in-person classes, which allows us to continue doing what we love most - teaching art in an environment which fosters fun and creativity!

Why Your Kids Need Creativity This Summer

There’s no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected kids of all ages, all stages of development. They have lost their regular routine, social interaction with their peers, and so much more. And while we have given our best efforts to retain some sense of normalcy, some things just cannot be replaced by virtual schooling. Throughout the pandemic, there has been an increased emphasis on standardized testing to ensure kids are staying up to date on their education. But do these scores reflect a well-rounded education? Education and test scores are important, but are they the most accurate way to measure children’s physical, cognitive, social, emotional and creative wellbeing?

In a year with so much loss, kids need a sense of normalcy wherever they can get it - they need to play. Kids need to exercise their creativity now more than ever! Although some might argue the focus should be on schoolwork, here are a few reasons why your child should engage in arts & crafts and other creative activities this summer.

Summer vacation is a part of normal routine

Virtual learning blurs the line between school life and home life, things that have usually been distinctly separate for kids. Traditionally, for children, summer vacation is a well-deserved break from schoolwork, a time to play and relax and let off some steam. Art classes give kids something to look forward to - an activity to occupy them in a productive way, rather than just watching Netflix. A great way to make this summer vacation feel normal is to engage your children in fun creative activities that exercise their bodies and minds as well. This will help them prepare to adjust to whatever changes may come with the next school year.
